My First Book: A Love Letter to the Messy Beginning

Hey fantasy family! Let's talk about something close to my heart: a wild, wonderful, terrifying journey of writing your first book.

You know that moment when a story idea hits you? Not just any idea, but THE idea? For me, it happened out of the blue. Instead of making dinner, I found myself scribbling character names on Post-it notes and drawing terrible maps on the back of my grocery list.

I remember thinking, "This is it. This is the story I have to tell."

The Beginning of the Obsession

That first rush of inspiration was like falling in love. I couldn't stop thinking about my characters. They followed me everywhere from the grocery store to applying for jobs (we had just moved overseas due to my husband's job). I filled a notebook with worldbuilding details before I even wrote the first chapter. (Side note: I still have that notebook, coffee stains and all, and flipping through them feels like reading old love letters.)

The Reality Check

Of course, then came the actual writing part. Oh boy. You know how they say you have to write a million bad words before you get to the good ones? Those first few chapters were... something else. My dialogue sounded like badly dubbed anime, my description alternated between "the tree was green" and purple prose that would make Tolkien blush, and my plot structure looked more like a kid's crayon scribble than a story arc.

But here's the thing - I loved every minute of it.

The Late Night Writing Sessions

There's something magical about writing at night. The world gets quiet, your inner critic goes to sleep, and it's just you and your characters. I can't count how many times I stayed up until sunrise, surviving on coffee and popcorn, just because I had to know what happened next in my own story. (Pro tip: your characters will surprise you at 3 AM. Let them.)

The Learning Curve

Looking back, I made every rookie mistake in the book:

  • Head-hopping POV like my characters were playing mental leapfrog

  • Describing every single thing my protagonist ate (sorry, readers don't need a detailed breakfast menu)

  • Starting the story with my character waking up (I know, I know!)

  • Writing a prologue that was basically a history textbook

  • Named every character with some variation of 'ae' because fantasy

But you know what? That's exactly how it should be. Your first book is where you learn, where you experiment, where you figure out what works for you and what doesn't.

The Community

One of the best surprises was discovering the writing community. From FaceBook author groups to NaNoWriMo sprints, I found my people. Other writers who understood the joy of hitting your daily word count, the agony of losing a character, and the weird satisfaction of solving a plot hole as I brushed my teeth.

The Truth About First Books

Here's what I wish someone had told me: your first book doesn't have to be perfect. It probably won't be published. And that's okay. What matters is that you're writing it. You're learning. You're creating something that didn't exist before.

It's like learning to play an instrument. Nobody expects you to perform at Carnegie Hall your first year. But oh, the joy of making music, even if it's just "Hot Cross Buns" played slightly off-key.

To Those Just Starting

If you're at the beginning of your first book, I'm honestly a little jealous. You're about to embark on one of the most exciting journeys of your life. It's going to be frustrating, challenging, and sometimes you'll want to throw your laptop out the window. But it's also going to be wonderful.

So here's to first books. To late-night writing sessions. To characters who won't let you sleep. To worlds waiting to be built. To stories that demand to be told.

Keep writing, keep dreaming, keep creating. Thank you for finding a corner in your world for my words! ✨

Until next time,

S. H. Blodgett
